Love Dies Hard
C.C. Cartwright
(Billionaire Romance #1 (Includes Bonus of Love Dies Hard 2))
Publication date: May 17th 2015
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

My name is Marcus Hunter. I own Hunter Investments, a billion dollar hedge fund.

I admit it, I’m a total womanizer. A player, a serial-seducer, call me what you like.

I enjoy a variety of women and I don’t do love.

I work hard, and I play even harder.

I rarely dip into the office pool. That was until I became intrigued with Sophie Shawn. She is a high-flying money manager like myself and we’ve had to work closely together.

Sophie’s my equal, she’s smart, sharp-witted and of course she has to be sexy-as-hell.

The way she shakes her little ass in her tight, short skirts has me wanting to bury myself deep inside her.

We’re enjoying a drink together after work.

She doesn’t know it yet, but I’m going to bed her tonight. I want to hear her beneath me begging for more. When I’m done with her she won’t be able to utter a single coherent word.

Little did I know, I would be the one in for a surprise from Miss Sophie Shawn.

EXCERPT:

We’re sitting at the bar in the restaurant downstairs from the offices of Hunter Investments. Sophie and I have put in long hours this week and we need to unwind. I can think of the perfect way to unwind and she’s sitting right next to me looking oh-so-damn sexy. Her dress slits open in the front and I think I catch a glimpse of, what is that, a garter and stockings?

I’m in trouble; she catches me looking.

“Like what you see, Marcus?” she says, as the words roll off those luscious red lips of hers.

“I do. I do indeed,” I say, as my eyes cast down to her breasts straining against the fabric of her low cut dress.

She lets out a soft laugh as she takes a sip of her wine.

“Have dinner with me,” I tell her.

“Alright,” she accepts my invitation.

“What are you in the mood for?” I ask.

“You,” she replies, and I’m not sure I heard her right.

“Excuse me?” I ask.

“You heard me,” she says, staring at me seductively.

Sophie is getting me so hot; I have to loosen my tie.

“Let’s eat first,” I say with a wicked smile.

“Suit yourself. You choose the place,” Sophie says.

“Let’s eat here,” I suggest.

“Sounds good,” she says, leaning into me as she slides off her bar stool and spreads her legs to make sure I can see up her skirt. Her silky dress pulls tightly across her breasts. Maybe we should skip dinner…

Once we close the door to her luxurious apartment and she puts her things down, she starts walking into her bedroom while she’s unbuttoning the front of her dress and sliding off its belt.

My feet are rooted in place as she leaves me standing in the entryway of her lavishly decorated apartment and I’m not sure what to make of this.

“Get in here,” she calls out to me from her bedroom.

Just like that, no foreplay? Damn, she’s throwing me off my game big time; she almost makes me nervous.

I walk slowly towards her room and she’s sprawled out sexily on her king size bed in the most alluring black lace lingerie. My heart stops. All she is wearing now is a black lace bra that she fills out nicely, then my eyes travel down to her shapely waistline where I see her black lace garter belt that looks amazing on her curves. Next, I see her black lace panties and sheer black stockings covering her long, lean legs, down to the tips of her toes.

She’s posed like a pin-up, and she looks so sexy. I immediately rise to the occasion.

“Strip,” she commands as she rolls over to turn on her iPod player.

I do as I’m told; this girl is stealing all of my lines.

Unbelievable.

I strip down to my tight black briefs and climb on top of her, then my lips crash down onto those ruby red lips of hers that I can’t wait to have wrapped around me.

He led us to the open window, and I looked out into the distance. The frosted chill of the glass stung my bare nipples as he pressed me against the floor to ceiling windowpane. "Andrew..." I breathed out.

"How do you turn the passion on and off just like that?" I asked.
"It's called acting," my husband said, matter-of-factly.
"Just how much of that is really acting?" I paused, then turned around and snarled at him. "So, you're telling me that when you're kissing another woman or fake screwing her, your body feels nothing?"

Dropping his hands on his hips, Mack looked at the clock hanging above the plasma

television.  It was already half past

five.  She was expecting him by six.  Since she only lived ten minutes away, he had
plenty of time.  Dropping into the
leather recliner in the corner – the one where he sat and read at night – he
dropped his head back against the chair.
“Fuck,” he groaned out loud.  He
didn’t know whether he dreaded tonight or was excited by it.  It had been years… literal years… since he’d taken a woman out on a date.  Sure, he’d fucked women more recently than
that, but those were chicks he’d picked up in a bar or at a medical conference
... women that he’d had a few hours of shameless fun with before sending them
on their merry way.  Each one of them had
been carefully selected and knew the score before their clothes had ever come
off.  If any of those ladies had been interested
in more than the number of orgasms he could give them, he’d sent them off on
their way with a wave and a smile.

Because

he didn’t do long-term relationships anymore.
He certainly didn’t fucking date.

Except,

now, it appeared he did.

What

the hell kind of voodoo magic had Millicent Robbins worked on him when he
wasn’t looking that now had him contemplating more than a casual fuck with a
woman?

Because

he knew it could never be casual with Millie.
And not just because she had a kid, either.

No,

Millie was the type of woman with whom a man put down roots.  That kind of guy bought a house.  That type of man would get a dog.  That man would help her raise a family.  Holy shit, he’d already done two out three of
those things, he realized with a horrified gasp.

Bolting

to his feet, he darted toward his phone.
He had to call this whole thing off before he found himself shackled to
yet another woman that would end up hating him for his dedication to his
job.  He had to cut Millie loose before
she looked at him and accused him of wasting the best years of her life waiting
for him to be ready to concentrate on them instead of rushing off to take care
of his patients.

He’d

dialed the first three numbers of her phone number before he realized….

“Millie

isn’t Tiffany,” Mack said out loud as he stared at the phone in his hand.  Looking toward his Newfoundland dog, he
grinned.  “She’s nothing like Tiffany, is
she?”

One

sharp yap from Nugget confirmed what he already knew and he slowly replaced the
phone on its base.

“Holy

shit,” he whispered, sinking onto the couch as he stared at his huge
long-haired dog.  “Millie couldn’t be
more different from Tiff if she tried.”
First off, Millie wasn’t injected with as much plastic as a Barbie doll.  Her tits still bounced when she walked,
unlike his ex’s that sat like stone against her chest.  Millie loved babies and kids.  Hell, she even had one of her own that she
loved with a passion that rivaled any parent’s love he’d ever seen.  Tiff, on the other hand, couldn’t stand
babies.   Sad, since he’d loved children
and had wanted them to have at least a couple of their own. She despised the
idea of having to be responsible for another person.  Although, in hindsight, he supposed it wasn’t
really shocking since she could barely accept responsibility for the things she
did.  Most important of all, though, was
the fact that he could never see Millie being unfaithful to him because she had
something his ex-wife had always lacked.
Something called integrity.  If
Millie wasn’t happy with him, she wouldn’t troll the local bars looking for an
easy hook-up to dull the pain.  Hell,
no.  Millicent would march right up to
him, rip off his scrotum, and shake it over her head much like the Native
Americans did when they’d taken a scalp from an enemy.   Oh, Millie would probably give him the
opportunity to make things right with her before she resorted to violence, but
if that was unsuccessful, he had no doubt she’d go the other route.

His

Millie could be a firecracker when crossed.

Fuck,

now he was thinking of her with highly possessive pronoun usage?  He was well and truly screwed.

“Dance with me, Mackenzie,” he said, holding my hand in his, sensually placing the other just below my hip bone.

“What are you−”

“Shhh…,” he admonished, expertly leading me in our dance, the band playing Cole Porter’s Every Time We Say Goodbye. “Just enjoy it and don’t think.”

I simply nodded, turning my head to scan the restaurant.

“Mackenzie, eyes on me. I need to know you’re with me.”

I snapped my eyes back to his, my mouth slightly agape as my heart pounded in my chest. He was warm and spellbinding. The way he held me in his arms comforted me and made me feel as if they were made to hold me.

“Are you with me?” he asked, raising his eyebrows.

“Yes,” I said, my voice soft.

He leaned toward me and the bit of stubble on his chin brushed my skin. “Yes what?” he whispered.

“I’m with you.”

The corners of his lips turned up slightly and there was a spark about him that wasn’t present yesterday. “I like the sound of that, Miss Delano.”

He pulled me closer and I tilted my head to peer into his striking eyes, needing the connection I felt at that moment. It was unlike anything I had ever experienced, all because of a well-placed hand, a sinfully sexy voice, eyes that made me want to melt, and arms that felt like home.

“Who would have thought that the Mackenzie whose lips I couldn’t stop seeing in my dreams last night would turn out to be Mackenzie Delano, proprietor of South Padre’s hottest new spot?”

“How did−”

“Shhh,” he said once more. “You think too much. Just enjoy the moment because it’s over once the band plays the final note to this melody.”

I snapped my mouth shut, a strange awareness of loss washing over me at the prospect of this complete stranger walking away from me once the song came to an end, wondering if I would ever see him again.

“You’re a lovely dancer, Miss Delano,” he commented.

“Thank you,” I answered, unsure of whether to say anything further. He seemed to be in complete control of the dance, of his words…and of mine. And, for the first time, I was okay with someone else calling the shots.

“You have a dancer’s body. I’m confident you’ve bewitched quite a few men with the way you can seamlessly navigate the dance floor.” He leaned toward me and whispered, “I must confess… You’ve bewitched me.”

His voice was sweet as it crooned in my ear, and I was left a silent, blubbering mute, the sincerity in his declaration sparking a renewed sense of longing I had ignored for years. My breathing grew ragged, and I was unable to formulate any response. I simply lost myself in the moment of our dance, wanting his sensual words to ring in the recesses of my mind for all eternity. I wished I could have recorded his voice murmuring those endearing words to me so I could replay them over and over again when I needed to feel something I didn’t think I would ever feel again.

He molded my frame to his, our bodies swaying to the classic tune, and began to sing along with the band. I imagined he was singing to me, and me alone. His voice was deep and guttural, but sweet as he leaned toward my neck and crooned the last verse into my ear. I closed my eyes, losing myself in his warmth, his voice, his everything.

All too soon, the final note rang out, silence encompassing the room, but we continued to sway to the music in our heads, our rhythm perfectly in tune to each other. A loud drum kick echoed, startling me, and I opened my eyes, almost expecting it all to be a dream. But it wasn’t, and I was met with my mysterious stranger’s strong face. Time stood still as we simply stared at each other, neither one of us moving. I licked my dry lips, nerves causing my breathing to grow more intense and labored.

He grabbed my hand and brought it to his soft lips, placing a kiss on it. The contact caused a rush of adrenaline to run through me. Before I could ask his name, he was gone, leaving me stunned and alone once more.
